Michelangelo

Michelangelo was one of the most famous artists in history. He was one of the leaders of the Italian Renaissance. He was mainly interested in creating large marble statues, but his endless creativity led to him to become a brilliant painter, architect and poet.

6 March 1475 Michelangelo was born in Caprese. His full name was Michelangelo Buonarroti

1481 His mother died.

1485 Michelangelo began school. He was taught the Humanist views by his teacher, Francesco da Urbino

1487 Michelangelo became an apprentice to the painter, Domenico Ghirlandajo.

1491-1492 Michelangelo worked in the Medici household.

1494-1495 Michelangelo worked in Bologna.

1496 Michelangelo moved to Rome. There he had his first success. He carved in marbles a life-sized statue of the Roman wine God Bacchus.

1498 Michelangelo carved a version of the Pieta, which now stands in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

1501 Michelangelo moved to Florence.

1504 Michelangelo finished his statue David.

1505 Michelangelo accepted a commission from Pope Julius II to create a tomb which would include 40 marble statues.

1508 Michelangelo stopped working on the tomb for a while, because Julius II commissioned him to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

1512 The Sistine Chapel ceiling was finished. Michelangelo returned to work on the tomb.

1516 Michelangelo completed a statue of Moses and two prisoners which is sometimes called The Heroic Captive and The Dying Captive.

1515-1534 Michelangelo spent these years working mostly for the Medici family in Florence. He designed and carved tombs for the family and also he designed the Medici Chapel.

1524-1559 Michelangelo designed the Laurentian library.

1534 When Michelangelo left Florence he left the chapel incomplete

1536-1541 Michelangelo returned to Rome and worked for Pope Paul III. He painted The Last Judgement.

1545 Michelangelo completed the fresco The Conversion of Saint Paul

1546 Pope Paul III commissioned Michelangelo to supervise the architect of St. Peter's Basilica, which ha d been left unfinished.

1550 Michelangelo completed The Crucifixion of Saint Peter.

1555 Michelangelo completed the Florentine Pieta.

1564 Michelangelo completed the Rondanini Pieta, which is now in Milan.

18 February 1564 Michelangelo died.
